Research Assistant III (Term) – Johnson Lab

This is a Contract position in Orlando, FL posted December 13, 2021.

The Research Assistant III (RA3) is part of the Carl Johnson Lab in the department of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for high level experiments relating to circadian rhythms (biological clocks).

This Research Assistant 3 position will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory in compliance with University Safety Protocols and performing experiments.

Duties will include maintaining cell cultures and ordering of specialty items but will focus on experiments under the supervision of Dr.

Johnson.

This position will report directly to the PI of the lab, Professor Carl Johnson.

The RA3 will perform high-level experiments concerning the mechanism of circadian rhythms, specifically applying what we know about circadian clock mechanisms in bacteria to the understanding of how these clocks work in insects (butterfly cells) and mammals (mice).

The Department of Biological Sciences has an excellent staff to facilitate issue resolution involving personnel, financial management, supply and equipment orders proposal submission, and infrastructure.

The faculty in the department carry out diverse research projects and often collaborate with other members within the department and in nearby departments.

This department covers a broad spectrum of biology, from molecules and cells to tissues and organisms to populations and ecosystems.

Award-winning faculty and graduate students teach and carry out research in Biochemistry, Structural Biology and Biophysics, Cell Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, Developmental Biology, and Neurobiology.

NOTE: A Term position is a staff position that exists for a period longer than six months but is not expected to last beyond one year.

Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment.

There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.

Duties and Responsibilities Under supervision and/or independently, run experiments/assays, analyze data, and record results: Read and follow experimental protocols.

Compile and communicate results to supervisor.

Maintain and transfer bacterial cultures.

Follow University safety protocols.

Perform experiments requiring molecular genetics and biochemical expertise protein purification designing new enzyme activity assays for application to high-throughput screening experience with mouse breeding is desirable Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures under supervision: May include PCR cycler, centrifuge, pH meter, spectrophotometer, autoclave, electrophoresis unit, analytical balance, etc.

Maintain and operate equipment according to manufacturer and university guidelines Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments: Maintain equipment, inventories, and chemical lists Maintain sterile conditions as required Prepare reagents Other duties as assigned Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in a science field is necessary.

Experience with molecular genetics and/or biochemistry is required Experience with cell culture and mouse breeding is preferred.
